What is a Forensic Psychiatrist?
A Forensic Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has, first, received specific training and education in the field of psychiatry. After completing a minimum of four years of training in psychiatry, the doctor then receives additional training and education in forensic psychiatry.
Forensic Psychiatry is a field in which psychiatric knowledge, skill, expertise, training and education is used to help attorneys and courts answer a broad range of questions posed by the legal system. Forensic psychiatrists provide services, usually to attorneys and courts, including evaluation (usually involving in-person examination of an individual and a review of medical and other relevant records), consultation with attorneys, production of reports detailing their expert opinions, and expert testimony during trials and other hearings.
